B.Sc. (Ag.Env.Sc) | Major in Agro-Environmental Sciences

Two men use a farming machine to harvest greens in a fieldThis major provides training in the science, biology, and management of cultivated crops and domestic livestock. In this interdisciplinary and solution-oriented field you鈥檒l learn how to produce food while protecting the environment.

You鈥檒l gain real-world experience in agricultural production in the crop fields, orchards, greenhouses, and dairy facilities on 缅北强奸's听Macdonald Campus. This program has a strong hands-on lab component and involves visits to agribusinesses.

Students who complete this major with the Professional Agrology specialization will be eligible to apply to the [Order of Agrologists of Quebec]. You may also be eligible for professional certification in other provinces and countries.

Your courses

In the Bachelor of Science (Agricultural and Environmental Sciences) - Major in Agro-Environmental Sciences, you鈥檒l explore the basic and applied biology of cultivated crops, domestic animals, arable soils, and the economics of agriculture through 42 credits of core courses.

You鈥檒l also choose one or two specializations in connected disciplines (24 credits per specialization) and, in your final year, can pursue a research-intensive Honours program.

Suggested specializations

In the听Agro-Environmental Sciences major, you鈥檒l need to choose at least one specialization. We recommend:

Animal Production

Animal nutrition and reproduction, maintaining respect for the environment and the welfare of animals.

Ecological Agriculture

Highlights the relationships among soils, plants, animals and humans.

Plant Production

Biology, physiology, breeding, propagation and management of domestic plants.

Professional Agrology

Through internships, projects and courses, develop an understanding of the social, legal and regulatory context in which Quebec agriculture is practiced.

Students who wish to become members of the Ordre des agronomes du Qu茅bec (OAQ) [Order of Agrologists of Quebec] must complete both the Professional Agrology specialization and one of the other suggested specializations.

Membership in the OAQ is also possible through the Agricultural Economics major or the Bioresource Engineering program.


Career paths

This program leads to a wide variety of careers in all sectors of agriculture, including agronomy if taken with the Professional Agrology Specialization. You could work in:

  • Crop consulting
  • Livestock nutrition
  • Food system design and improvement
  • Farm business management
  • International development consulting


Internships & research

You鈥檒l have plenty of opportunities to learn off campus in this program through field studies and internships. Our students have been:

  • Interning at local dairy and vegetable farms
  • Analyzing insect populations in India
  • Optimizing the performance of autonomous weed removal robots
  • Documenting the welfare of dairy calves

A听Bachelor's degree听is an undergraduate degree that normally takes 3 to 4 full-time years of study to complete, depending on the student鈥檚 previous education system.

If you are applying from high school (outside of Quebec's CEGEP system), you cannot apply directly to this major. You must apply to the associated听Freshman/Foundation Year听program.
