Commerce

Dear Commerce Graduates:

During the past four years we have tried to make sure that most of your waking hours were spent earning your degree. Now you have it and you are free. In fact, you probably have greater freedom now than at any time in the past or than you are ever likely to have again. Most of our days are spent repeating the activities and mistakes of yesterday and despite our New Year鈥檚 resolutions, it is only rarely that we are free to depart on a completely new path. As you leave the University you are not only free to make choices, you must do so.

Is it to be a job or more formal education? If a job, is the income to be used to raise a family or to surround yourself with luxury? And what on earth will you do with the time made available by the fact that you no longer have to hand in accounting assignments.

I have no advice to offer you. I only hope that you realize now (not ten years from now) that you will probably never be as free as you are right now. I also hope that in ten years time you will be pleased with the choices you are now making.

D. E. Armstrong
Director, School of Commerce
