Practical Instruction is also known as private lessons, which are one-on-one instruction with a private teacher for an instrument/voice which a student learns.

Table 1. Practical Instruction Entitlement

Students who opt to take the last year of practical instruction in their lesson quota will have practical instruction counted as elective lessons. Credits earned from elective lessons can be counted as free/music electives in a B.Mus. program. For example, a B.Mus. Performance student who started the program as a U0 student, and who opts to complete the degree in five, instead of four, years may apply for a fifth year of practical instruction, which will be noted as elective lessons. See Elective Lessons mcgill.ca/music/resources/undergraduate/practical-instruction-muin-courses/elective-lessons for detail.

The maximum of four years of practical instruction for L.Mus. students includes instruction received while in a B.Mus. program either during or prior to registration in the L.Mus. program.

Note: Part-time students in the B.Mus. and L.Mus. programs and those who have exhausted the above-listed maxima will be charged a supplemental private lesson fee of $1,012.80 per term in addition to the per-credit fee, and the music practical instruction fee of $645.09 per term. Supplemental private lesson fee is waived for part-time students in the graduating year.

Special or part-time Visiting Students who are permitted to enrol for practical instruction will also be charged a supplemental private lesson fee of $1.012.80 per term, in addition to the per-credit fee and the music practical instruction fee of $645.09 per term, as will all other students taking instruction in a second practical subject.
