Biography

Dominique Bérubé is the Vice-President, Research and Innovation, and Professor in the Faculty of Engineering at 山ǿ. A strategic leader with intersectoral expertise of the academic, research, and innovation ecosystem, Professor Bérubé has more than 22 years of experience in research funding and innovation administration. A member of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec, she holds a Ph.D. in environmental sciences from the Université du Québec à Montréal and master's and bachelor's degrees from Polytechnique Montréal in metallurgical and materials science.

From 2022-2024, Professor Bérubé was the Vice-President of Research and Graduate Studies at Concordia University. During her tenure, the university secured significant research investments from the Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF) and the New Frontiers in Research Fund (NFRF).

From 2015-2021, Professor Bérubé served as Vice-President of Research at the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), leading the vision for SSHRC's core research funding programs and inter-agency programs. In this role, she transformed the Canadian research ecosystem through various initiatives, whilst placing equity, diversity, and inclusion at the heart of research evaluation and removing systemic barriers to funding access. She developed new programs to respond to the pandemic's impact, and supported interdisciplinarity, high-risk and high-impact research and the Canadian biomanufacturing strategy. Professor Bérubé led SSHRC’s response to the Call to Action 65 of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, in partnership with the National Center for Truth and Reconciliation and the Tri-agency Indigenous Strategic Plan. She was also responsible for SSHRC’s Indigenous Advisory Circle.

Before joining SSHRC, Professor Bérubé was Associate Vice-President of Research at the Université de Montréal, where she coordinated research across the university ecosystem, leading the development of large-scale initiatives in various fields such as artificial intelligence and the health sector. She also chaired the board of the Érudit consortium, leading the digital publishing organization in social sciences and humanities to its recognition as a major scientific infrastructure in Canada.
