Placement

The Department offers assistance to students in every aspect of placement. Our Placement Officer counsels students about coursework and areas of competence, helps to establish evidence of teaching ability, administers the dossier for job applications and provides advice and follow-up in the interview process. Placement assistance is also offered to graduate alumni.

The main components of the placement service are:

  1. Job Seekers' Workshop. This is a 12-week seminar that takes place every winter, where students who are preparing to go on the academic job market for the first timeprepare drafts of their application materials and receive feedback and advice. The workshop is taught by the Placement Officer, with several other faculty members acting asguest speakers.
  2. Practice job talks and practice job interviews aregiven during the fall term by graduate students and recent graduate alumni who are goingon the academic job market for the first time.
  3. Dossier service. Graduate students and recent graduate alumni have the option of having their reference letters sent to Mr. Andrew Stoten, who submits them to potential employers. Reference letters undergo a quality and consistency check by the Placement Officer.
  4. Professional development sessionsfor current PhD students are held on an ad hoc basis. These cover a variety of topics, such ashow to find a postdoc and how to write an effective teaching dossier.
  5. Individual consultationis available toPhD students on issues related to career planning and job search.

Below, our graduates are listed by the year of their graduation. (LTA) stands for limited term appointment, (tt) for tenure track, and (t) for tenured. For updates and corrections, please contact our Placement Officer, Prof. chris.howard [at] mcgill.ca (Chris Howard),who maintains the placement data.
