The Division of Pediatric Ophthalmology at the Children's Vision Centre is part of the Department of Pediatric Surgery at the 缅北强奸 Health Centre and the 缅北强奸 Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. Our mission is to prevent, diagnose, probe, understand, treat and manage all pediatric eye diseases. We provide an exciting teaching atmosphere for medical students, orthoptists, residents, fellows and graduate students. In addition, we have active human research programs at the Center for Innovative Medicine (CIM), in the laboratories and clinics, where we do retinal gene discovery and treatments for blindness, all funded by the Montreal Children鈥檚 Foundation, the VHRN, NIH, CIHR, FFB Canada and FRSQ.
We have particular areas of expertise in eye trauma, orbit, uveitis, strabismus, amblyopia, pediatric cataracts, glaucoma, neuro-ophthalmology, phacomatoses, and genetic and molecular biology of blindness due to retinal degenerations like Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA) and retinitis pigmentosa (RP). We have a special expertise in the diagnosis and treatment for ROP in premature babies in the MCH-NICU and screen 500+ babies/yr. We have very strong collaborations with the MCH the Neuro-surgery, ENT, rheumatology, dermatology, emergency and other departments, also with St Justine Hospital.
At the CIM, we are participating in the first human clinical trials for blind children and young adults with retinal degenerations, to test the safety and efficacy of sub-retinal gene therapy, gene editing, new drugs (oral retinoids, NAC attack), and other novel modalities, with very exciting early results.
We perform more than 300 surgeries per year and teach eye surgery to residents and fellows. We do a large variety of surgeries including strabismus, tumors, glaucoma, lids, orbit, cataracts and laser.
