La recherche d’Amir Shmuel a deux objectifs. L’un est de comprendre les mécanismes neuronaux sous-jacents aux signaux en imagerie cérébrale fonctionnelle et d’évaluer dans quelle mesure ces signaux indiquent l’activité neuronale mesurée localement. Le second objectif est d’élucider les principes et processus que le cortex cérébral utilise pour analyser l’information visuelle et produire une perception visuelle cohérente. L’approche intégrative privilégiée au laboratoire d’Amir Shmuel combine des techniques d’imagerie et d’enregistrement électriqueÌý: imagerie par résonance magnétique fonctionnelle (IRMf), imagerie optique utilisant des signaux intrinsèques et des colorants sensibles à la tension, enregistrements neurophysiologiques multivoies, et combinaison simultanée de neurophysiologie et d’IRMf. Ensemble, ces techniques couvrent de multiples niveaux de résolution spatiale et temporelle. Les signaux de l’activité du cerveau obtenus par des méthodes d’imagerie non effractives à grande échelle sont comparés à l’activité d’ensembles de neurones observée par imagerie optique, ainsi qu’à l’activité électrique enregistrée dans des groupes de neurones et des neurones individuels.
