Ph.D. (Composition)

Two recent essays (in English or French) on any aspect of compositional research related to music theory, sound recording, musicology, music technology, music education, or to any other related field such as acoustics, mathematics, psychology, etc. Each essay must be a minimum of 10 typed pages, double spaced. Composition Portfolio. A minimum of three scores of recent work, together with a brief presentation for each (e.g., program notes, explanatory notes, compositional techniques, etc.). Music Theory Portfolio (Written and Notated). The Music Theory Portfolio should include samples of your previous work that demonstrate your musical skills and your proficiency in scholarly writing. Please combine all items into two PDFs, separated into work that is predominantly based in musical notation, and work that is predominantly based in prose. For each file, list the contents on the first page of the file. Include as many samples of your academic work as you find helpful.

These may include:

Musical work such as counterpoint, harmony exercises, model compositions, Schenkerian graphs, and other practical exercises. Upload to Theory Portfolio – Notated.

Written work in music theory or music analysis, and other academic papers: where applicable you may upload papers ​on theoretical topics, or that illustrate your ability to write analytically on a range of styles.
You may also include an essay on a music historical topic or an academic paper from another field if relevant. Upload to Theory Portfolio –Written.

Recording Samples and Technical Descriptions. Several examples of your recorded music. Include audio samples (.wav format strongly suggested) and technical descriptions of the recordings you are submitting (PDF format). These descriptions should include the technical set-up, a discussion of the problems encountered, the solutions to these problems, and an evaluation of the results. Upload written technical descriptions and audio samples to the Multimedia Portfolio in your application.
