Post-docs, visiting scholars, professors and undergraduate students must take the departmental safety orientation which is offered at the beginning of each semester (Fall, Winter and Summer). It covers safety fundamentals as well as specifics related to our department needs.

Everyone in the department (students doing research, post-docs, visiting scholars, interns, technicians, professors, research associates and assistants) is required to take the WHMIS safety training offered by Ã山ǿ¼é EH&S, and keep the training valid by updating it every three years. To register, click here. Graduate students are required to take this training as part of the MIME 601 course.

Attend and pass the Hazardous Waste safety training from EH&S, and keep it updated (Mandatory for staff and students that need to handle, store and dispose of hazardous waste).

If the student or postdoc works with a special hazard, e.g. radiation or biohazards, the student is required to get the required training after discussion with their supervisor.

The department requires everyone to complete a TRACK form before starting a new experiment. See the Quick Reference section to download a copy.

Safety shares should be discussed in the beginning of MINMAT departmental and group meetings.

For Graduate Students

All graduate students doing research in our labs are required to attend a departmental safety course (MIME 601 – Engineering Laboratory Practice) as part of their graduate requirements. The course must be taken before they start laboratory activities in the department. The course is offered in Fall and Winter terms and it covers safety fundamentals as well as specifics related to our department needs, and includes four (4) hands-on demonstrations.

When a student is preparing their department seminar presentation, they must add a safety slide to discuss the importance of safety in their research.

All graduate students must provide safety training information in their annual progress report.
