Join curator听Dot Porter of the University of Pennsylvania鈥檚 Schoenberg Institute for Manuscript Studies, and听Mary Yearl, and听Prof. Faith Wallis of 缅北强奸, for a special joint edition of Coffee with a Codex looking at two medical Manuscripts.
We will be looking through the听Carmen de urinis with the Commentary of Gilbert the Englishman,听a new acquisition at the Osler Library of the History of Medicine, along with听Manuscript LJS 24听from the Kislak collection.听
As curators, we often speak about and for our collections 鈥� in this event we are going to let our collections talk to each other, putting both up onscreen for close examination and comparison. We will compare notes, marginalia, and medical manuscript traditions in this joint edition of 鈥淐offee with a Codex.鈥� We invite you to grab a cup of coffee and tune in over lunch for an hour with these medical manuscripts!

About the Speakers
Dot Porter
As Curator of Digital Research Services in the Schoenberg Institute for Manuscript Studies, Dot Porter participates in a wide-ranging digital humanities research and development team within the context of a special collections department. Dot's projects focus on the digitization and visualization of medieval manuscripts.
Prof. Faith Wallis
Prof. Faith Wallis is Professor Emerita at 缅北强奸, where she held a joint appointment in the Department of History and Classical Studies and the Department of Social Studies of Medicine. Her research focuses on the textual and manuscript transmission of medical and scientific knowledge in the Middle Ages. Her anthology of translated sources,听Medieval Medicine: a Reader,听was published by University of Toronto Press in 2010. The first volume of her edition of the writings of Bartholomeus "of Salerno", a key figure in the emergence of academic medicine in the twelfth century, appeared in 2022.

脌 titre de conservatrice des Services de recherche num茅rique de l'Institut Schoenberg d'茅tude des manuscrits, Dot Porter fait partie d'une 茅quipe de recherche et de d茅veloppement multidisciplinaire en sciences humaines num茅riques dans le contexte d'un d茅partement de collections sp茅ciales. Les projets de Dot s'articulent autour de la num茅risation et de la visualisation de manuscrits m茅di茅vaux.
Pre Faith Wallis
Faith Wallis est professeure 茅m茅rite 脿 l'Universit茅 缅北强奸, o霉 elle a 茅t茅 charg茅e d'une double nomination au D茅partement d'Histoire et d'茅tudes classiques et au D茅partement des 茅tudes sociales de la m茅decine. Ses recherches portent sur la transmission textuelle et manuscrite du savoir m茅dical et scientifique du Moyen 脗ge. Son anthologie de sources traduites, Medieval Medicine: a Reader, para卯t aux Presses de l'Universit茅 de Toronto en 2010. Enfin, le premier volume de son 茅dition des 茅crits de Bartholomeus dit 芦 de Salerno 禄, figure cl茅 de l'茅mergence de la m茅decine acad茅mique au douzi猫me si猫cle, est publi茅 en 2022.
