Canadian Interprofessional Health Collaborative (CIHC) framework
The OIPE鈥檚 IPE curriculum is based on evidence-based and best practices in IPE design and implementation. The IPE curriculum integrates the IPE competencies from the Canadian Interprofessional Health Collaborative Framework (CIHC, 2010). This framework comprises a set of six competency domains that focus on the development and integration of attitudes, behaviors, values, and judgments necessary for collaborative practice. These domains are:
- Role clarification
- Team functioning
- Interprofessional communication
- Patient/client/family/community-centered care
- Interprofessional conflict resolution
- Collaborative leadership
Collaboration is a developmental process and therefore, interprofessional learning is cumulative over one鈥檚 professional practice, reflecting a continuum of learning (CIHC, 2010). The IPE curriculum must address the substantive changes occurring in health care, with increased emphasis on the ability of health care providers to engage in teamwork, effective communication, and collaborative client-centred care. The CIHC Framework can also be applied to research, social policy, and clinical practice.
The IPE curriculum integrates instructional design principles guided by learning theories for adult learning and instructional activities that focus on interaction, communication and teamwork processes. The learning activities are introduced at the formative stages across the curriculum. These activities are supported by debriefing opportunities with trained facilitators (faculty and clinicians from different health professions and educational or clinical backgrounds) to promote student reflection on learning. The OIPE provides faculty development training.
