Webinar: Towards the Utilization of Agricultural Drainage Benefits for Facing the Future Challenges and Achieving Sustainability

ICID, as part of its capacity development program and to attract young minds to agricultural water management has been organizing training programs and workshops for YP鈥檚 regionally and internationally. The main objectives of the training program/workshops are to capacitate the young water experts in the area of irrigation and drainage sector and motivate action towards national development.
As part of CDTE-WG, AFRWG and WG-LDRG activities, a series of webinars had been organized for the capacity building and development of YP鈥檚 and one of these programs is a webinar on: Towards the utilization of Agricultural drainage benefits for facing future challenges and achieving sustainability. This webinar was a good opportunity for the participants to have background about multi benefits of agricultural drainage and how these systems could be utilized. This webinar was moderated by VPH Dr. Mohamed Abd El Moneim Wahba (Egypt) and featured speakers including: PH Prof. Em. Dr. Ir. Bart Schultz (The Netherlands), PH Prof. Chandra A. Madramootoo P.Eng. (Canada), and VPH Dr. Willem F. Vlotman (Australia).
United Nations Science Summit

Dr. Chandra Madramootoo led a session at the United Nations Science Summit entitled: Food Self Sufficiency for Resilient Development and Economic Growth in Small Island Developing States. This session promoted an open dialogue on overcoming food and nutrition insecurity in the SIDS, so that they can have a more resilient development pathway and positive growth scenario.
Featured presenters on the panel were: President Irfaan Ali of Guyana, Hon. Minster Indar Weir of Barbados, Ismahane Elouafi of FAO, Gordon of 缅北强奸, Audia Barnett of Jamaica, Saidul Islam of Singapore.

Dr. Chandra Madramootoo was responsible for coordinating inputs to the UN Secretary-General鈥檚 2021 Food Systems Summit. The focus of this Summit was to set the stage for global food systems transformation in order to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.
ASABE/IA 6th Decennial National Irrigation Symposium

Former PhD students, Drs Aghil Yari and Samuel Ihuoma, will present the results of their research at the ASABE/IA 6th Decennial National Irrigation Symposium on December 7 and 8, 2021. The title of their presentations are: Using variable-rate irrigation for water and energy conservation and crop productivity: A case study in Southern Alberta, Canada by Drs Yari and Madramootoo, and Satellite observations of variability in evapotranspiration over an intensive tomato producing region of Southern Ontario, Canada by Drs. Ihuoma and Madramootoo.

International Symposium Agricultural Greenhouse Gases and Increasing Carbon Sequestration in a Circular Economy

The 缅北强奸 Water Innovation Lab, in conjunction with the University of Saskatchewan and Dalhousie University held this virtual on-line international symposium, under the auspices of the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Agricultural Greenhouse Gases Program (AGGP) II. The Symposium was held in collaboration with the Canadian Water Resource Association, Fulbright Canada, the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage and the Global Research Alliance. The aim of the symposium was to present the results of over 5 years of research on beneficial water management practices which simultaneously reduce greenhouse gas emissions, increase agricultural productivity, and produce environmental co-benefits. Dr. Michael Hawes, President and CEO of Fulbright Canada gave the welcome remarks, while Professor Rattan Lal Director of the CFAES Rattan Lal Center for Carbon Management and Sequestration at The Ohio State University, and recipient of the 2020 World Food Prize gave the keynote speech. The feature presentation was delivered by Dr. Tim Searchinger, a Senior Fellow and Technical Director of the Food Program at the World Resource Institute in Washington DC. These presentations were followed by two panels: Assessment and Modelling of Ecosystem Dynamics, and Framing Approaches to Greenhouse Gas Reductions in a Circular Economy. The panels featured research results that measured, predicted, and mitigated GHG emissions. Research showed how machine learning, biophysical and economic models can be integrated to establish best practices and policies for agricultural producers. Future research needs to integrate GHG emissions and agricultural water management with economic modelling were identified, in order to reduce climate change impacts.
