Indigenous Graduate Excellence Recruitment Fellowship (IGEF)

In support of theÌý52 Calls to Actions for Truth and ReconciliationÌýat Ã山ǿ¼é, Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies offers recruitment awards to Indigenous applicants to graduate degree programs.

Value

PhD – 10,000

Master’s (Thesis) – 5,000

Master’s (Non-thesis) – 2,500

This award is non-renewable and paid in installments over the first 12 months of study. The award is always provided in addition to core funding offered by a department, supervisor, or Faculty and cannot replace that funding.

Eligibility

Eligible candidates possess one of the following documents to support their declaration for this award.

First Nations:

  • Indian status cards from First Nations who are federally recognized and those listed on the

  • Non-Status First Nations applicants (can provide their parents and/or grandparents Indian status card & long form birth certificate or baptismal certificate)

  • A membership card indicating that they are a Non-Status First Nations who are currently in a court case (example: Algonquin)

²Ñé³Ù¾±²õ:

  • Métis citizenship from organizations that are members of the Métis National Council;

Inuit:

  • Nunavut Trust Certificate card or Inuit roll number

American Indian, Hawaiian Native, or Alaskan Native

  • Citizenship document from tribes that are state or federally recognized.

Candidates who self-declare during the admissions process will be contacted by GPS. Please monitor your email account.

To confirm acceptance to the offer, an applicant must:

  • Confirm intention to self-identify for the purposes of this award as per instructions sent by email;
  • Confirm acceptance of the fellowship following the offer’s instructions;
  • Complete full-time registration to the first year of their degree program.

Other Considerations

A student is only eligible for one GPS recruitment award per degree level. Students changing their program at the same level (e.g. PhD to PhD) are not eligible for another GPS recruitment award. Back-tracking (PhD to Masters) students are also not eligible.Ìý

As an internal Ã山ǿ¼é award, this recruitment award is subject to the Ã山ǿ¼é Award Holder's Guide, so we ask that you familiarize yourself with the document.

Departments may include this award in a Funding letter offer as the "Indigenous Graduate Excellence Recruitment Fellowship", but this award is administered directly by GPS as described above.
