Ã山ǿ¼é's Faculty of Law was pleased to host a two-day conference on the Canada – European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA).

The first day of the conference focused on Regional Trade Agreements and EU Trade Policy.

The second day was devoted to investment law and investor state dispute settlement.

Update: The Ã山ǿ¼é International Journal of Sustainable Development Law and Policy (JSDLP) sat down with three experts at the CETA conference to ask questions on the new Canada-Europe free trade agreement, and get their perspectives on what impacts the treaty would have on the environment. .

Friday, October 31: This is the second of a series of three conferences, held in Lausanne, Montréal and Brussels, designed to review the many aspects of the CETA text under the aegis of the SSHRC sponsored Canada – EU Strategic Dialogue. These meetings are designed to enhance understanding of European trade objectives in Canada and of Canadian trade objectives in Europe. Investment and Investor-State Dispute Settlement in the CETA

Saturday, November 1: One of the most interesting sections of CETA is the investment chapter, which aims to clarify key substantive provisions commonly found in investment treaties, including the fair and equitable treatment provision, in addition to including detailed procedural provisions delineating with more specificity the characteristics of arbitrators and their powers in resolving cases. Participants in a closing roundtable will discuss the implications of CETA, one of three investment agreements – the other two being the Trans-Pacific Partnership and the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership – that will shape world investment and trade in the twenty-first century.
