Reporting directly to the Family Medicine Postgraduate Program Director, the GMF-U Postgraduate Educational Director is responsible for the overall conduct of the residency program within the Family Medicine Unit. Time commitment is estimated at 2 days/week (.40 FTE) averaged over the year but is variable.
The responsibilities of the GMF-U postgraduate educational director include:
- Operation of the residency program such that it meets the general standards of accreditation, and the specific standards set forth by the accrediting colleges.
- Implementation of policies put forward by the Program Committee.
- Chairing the local Competency committee, including coordination of the evaluation of residents, submission of the evaluations via One45 to the Postgraduate Residency Office, and development of FLEX plans, in a timely manner.
- Participation in the selection of residency candidates for admission to the program including CaRMS interviews.
- Proper orientation of the incoming residents as well as outlining objectives of each FMU rotation to Family Medicine residents and residents from other specialties choosing to do a Family Medicine elective.
- Attendance at monthly meetings of the Department of Family Medicine鈥檚 Postgraduate Competency Committee, bi-monthly meetings of other PG committees, and PG retreats.
- Establishment of the necessary mechanisms to provide mentorship for the residents in dealing with day-to-day problems that arise.聽
- Ongoing review and improvement of the local educational program and the resources available. The opinions of the residents must be among the factors considered in this review. This includes:
- An assessment of each component of the program, both in family medicine and in other departments, to ensure that the educational objectives are being met, and to implement any necessary improvements;
- An assessment of resource allocation to ensure that resources and facilities are being utilized with optimal effectiveness;
- An assessment of teaching in the program, including academic half-days and exam practice;
-聽Collaboration with the GMF-U Director or committees in all of the above as well as in the assessment of the teachers at the site. - Providing residents with the mechanisms to address their well-being and making residents aware of the necessary resources.
- Collaboration with the educational administrative assistant and the undergraduate program coordinator at the GMF-U in coordinating teaching resources and needs for all learners.
