Purpose and Objectives of the Awards

These awards will be used to enhance the graduate training of students in the graduate program in Experimental Medicine (M.Sc. or Ph.D.) by providing travel funds for the presentation of a scholarly contribution at a scientific conference.

Source of Funds

These awards derive from the income generated by an endowment fund established in 2004 in memory of Dr. Gerald B. Price, former Director of the Division of Experimental Medicine and member of the Department of Medicine and the 缅北强奸 Cancer Centre, as well as from monies set aside by the University for this purpose.

Value of Awards

For Remote Conferences: Direct costs to attend the conference (e.g., registration fees, abstract submission fees) will be reimbursed following the submission of receipts.

For In-Person Conferences: Award recipients will be reimbursed for the amount spent to attend the conference for which they received the award, up to a maximum of $1,250 CAD. The awards may be used to pay for travel, conference fees, food and hotel costs, etc., at the recipient鈥檚 discretion. Expenditure must be justified with receipts. Covid-related costs (Covid tests, quarantine costs, etc.) cannot be reimbursed by the GREAT travel awards.

Supervisor Contribution

The recipient鈥檚 supervisor is expected to provide any additional travel support necessary to enable the student to attend the conference, up to a maximum of $650.00.

Eligibility

At the time of application, applicants must be registered as full-time graduate students in Experimental Medicine (or additional session students, working full-time on their degree).

Applicants must be presenting a paper or poster at a scholarly meeting which falls within the specified time period of the competition.听Students may apply for a travel award prior to receiving confirmation of acceptance of their paper or poster, but must submit proof of acceptance before receiving the travel reimbursement.听

Applications for support to attend conferences which have already taken place will not be considered.

Required Documents

  • One (1) copy of the application form bearing original signatures where required.
  • An abstract of the paper to be presented (1 page maximum).

Evidence of acceptance to present a paper or poster (copy of letter of acceptance or of conference program). If not available at time of application, the proof of acceptance must be submitted as soon as possible to the departmental office. Payment will not be issued until this documentation is received.

Attribution of Awards

The number of awards attributed will be dependent on the amount of funding available. The awards themselves will be attributed by a random draw among all eligible applicants.

Announcement of Results

E-mails announcing competition results will be sent to all applicants approximately 2 weeks after the deadline.

Payment

The award is paid as a reimbursement of travel expenses, and this only AFTER the conference has taken place (in order to be assured that the awardee has attended the conference). Recipients of the award must provide the Department with receipts via email (totaling as close as possible to the amount of the award) in order to obtain the full payment of the award.
