Faculty Program in Environment (54 credits)

The BA Faculty Program in Environment comprises two course components: Core and Concentration.

1. Core (Required Courses) (21 credits)

Core -- Introductory Courses (15 credits)

The Core includes four introductory courses and one intermediate course which expose students to different interdisciplinary perspectives, approaches, and world views -- to help them understand the complexity and conflicts that underlie most environmental problems. Students will be challenged by the Core program to look beyond the confines of their individual views of environment.

ENVR 200 - The Global Environment
ENVR 201 - Society,Environ&Sustainability
ENVR 202 - The Evolving Earth
ENVR 203 - Knowledge, Ethics&Environment
ENVR 301 - Environmental Research Design


Core -- Senior Courses (6 credits)

In the two senior courses of the Core, students will apply the general and specialized knowledge acquired through the rest of the program, to the analysis of a selection of contemporary environmental problems.

ENVR 400 - Environmental Thought (3 cr)

AND One of the following Senior Research Project courses (3 cr*) -
AEBI 427 - Barbados Interdisc Project (6 cr) (M) (in Barbados)
ENVR 401 - Environmental Research (3 cr)
ENVR 451 - Research in Panama (6 cr) (in Panama)
FSCI 444 - Barbados Research Project (67 cr) (in Barbados)
* Only 3 credits will be applied to the program; extra credits will count as electives.

2. Concentration (Complementary Courses) (33 credits)

In addition to the Core, each student chooses a Concentration.听 Previously referred to as Domains, Concentrations provide a transdisciplinary study of a particular theme or component of the environment. The requirements and complementary course sets vary between Concentrations; these can be viewed by clicking on the links to each Concentration, below.听

Choose from one of three Concentrations in the B.A. Faculty Program Environment:

Ecological Determinants of Health in Society
Economics and the Earth's Environment
Environment and Development

To obtain a B.Arts Faculty Program in Environment, students must:

(a) pass all courses counted towards the Faculty Program Environment with a grade of C or higher; and

(b) confirm that their course selection satisfies the required components of the Bieler School of Environment听core and their chosen Concentration, and that the complementary courses are approved courses in their chosen Concentration.

(c) fufill all Faculty requirements as specified in the Faculty of Arts section of the e-Calendar, and which includes meeting the minimum credit requirement as specified in their letter of admission.

(d) complete as either a pre- or co-requisite for the Core courses:

Numeracy Course:
One of the following calculus courses -
MATH 139 - Calculus 1 with Precalculus
MATH 140 - Calculus 1
or equivalent (e.g., CEGEP objective 00UN)

AND Science course:
One of the following science courses (varies according to domain; the following are examples ONLY):
BIOL 111 - Principles:Organismal Biology
AEBI 120 - General Biology (Macdonald Campus)
CHEM 110 - General Chemistry 1
PHYS 101 - Intro Physics - Mechanics
or equivalent (e.g., CEGEP objectives Biology 00UK, Chemistry 00UL, Physics 00UR).

Students should complete the pre-/co-requisite courses by the end of their U1 year.听 These 100-level courses, if taken exclusively for the purpose of fulfilling this program pre- or co-requisite requirement, may be taken using the Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory Option.
