Op-Ed: COVID-19 Doesn’t Discriminate, But People Do
Published: 23 May 2020
Research assistant and PhD student Rebecca Katz has written an op-ed piece about discrimination in the time of COVID-19. She explains:Ìý
It’s cliché to say that Covid-19 doesn’t discriminate. Viruses –Ìýwhich occupy a grey area between nonliving and living organismsÌý– can’t perceive race, class, religion, or other personal characteristics. However, humans and our social structures do, with tragic results, including physical attacks,Ìýproliferating online hatred, andÌýdisproportionate Covid-19 death rates in racialized communitiesÌýthat represent large percentages of front-line health care and service workers.
Rebecca talks about how marginalizedÌýcommunities have been 'other-ed' and scapegoated during this pandemic.
