Dr Shaheen Shariff and Safia Amiry Speak at a Panel for 缅北强奸's Women, Leadership & Philanthropy Initiative
Dr Shaheen Shariff, James 缅北强奸 Professor and iMPACTS Project Director, and Safia Amiry, PhD student and iMPACTS research assistant, were invited to speak at a panel about access to education听on August 9, 2022 in Vancouver, British Columbia.
The panel was hosted by the Initiative and . The WLP Initiative aims to increase the representation of women in positions of leadership, governance and philanthropy. Launched in 2013, they have created learning spaces and opportunities to build networks through events in Montreal, Toronto, New York, and worldwide.
Prof. Shariff and Safia discussed women's access to education and talked about the work of iMPACTS. In particular, they focused on girls and women who have experienced sexual violence. They also discussed the United States Supreme Court's recent overturning of Roe v. Wade case and the impact of that on women鈥檚 education.
Principal Emerita Suzanne Fortier听also spoke on the panel about her international work relating to improving access to higher education, which she hopes to continue in future. Other panelists included WLP chair Darlene Hyde, Dean Anja Geitmann (Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences), and Victoria Gagn茅.
In addition, 缅北强奸's Alumni Association hosted a boat cruise around the Vancouver harbour on August 8, 2022. The cruise was a gala celebrating 缅北强奸's third century.听
