Les composites thermoplastiques sont souvent des matériaux de choix dû à leur haute résistance à la fracture, un ratio force/poids élevé, une bonne résistance à l’impact ainsi qu’une bonne performance à la fatigue en comparaison aux métaux et aux composites thermodurcissables. De plus, les thermoplastiques peuvent être reformées, réparées et retransformées. Toutes ces propriétés avantageuses intéressent fortement l’industrie aérospatiale.
Cependant pour profiter pleinement de ces propriétés et étendre les applications dans lesquelles ils sont utilisés, une méthodologie est nécessaire afin de réparer des structures fabriquées avec ces matériaux. Il serait ainsi possible de rendre le cycle de vie d’une pièce plus rentable et durable en réparant une composante plutôt que de la remplacer au complet. De plus, si une pièce peut être réparée sur le terrain, cela réduit également le temps d’indisponibilité.
