We are thrilled to announce the appointments of three colleagues to named chairs in the Faculty of Law.

  • Fabien Gélinas has been named Sir William C. Macdonald Professor of Law, for a seven-year term commencing May 1, 2016. Fabien Gélinas, who leads the Private Justice and the Rule of Law research team, specialises in international dispute resolution and arbitration.

To encourage innovation and stimulate interest in research among law students at faculties of Quebec civil law, the Paul-André Crépeau Center for Private and Comparative Law is launching a student poster contest.

The contest is linked to the conference that will mark, on 12 February 2016, the Crépeau Centre’s 40th anniversary, during which poster submissions will be displayed and the  winners announced.

John G. Murphy and Neil Hazan (BCL/LLB'02) of Borden Ladner Gervais (BLG) visited the Faculty of Law on July 16 to deliver an instalment in the generous donation that the firm and its members are making to the Faculty’s Paul-André Crépeau Centre for Private and Comparative Law. BLG and its lawyers have pledged $400,000 (see announcement).

The Faculty is pleased to announce the appointment of Lionel Smith (first picture) to the Sir William Macdonald Chair. Established in 1895, the Macdonald Chair is one of the oldest endowed positions at Ã山ǿ¼é. In addition, Professor Smith was also selected for a Killam Research Fellowship in March 2014 in recognition of his outstanding research on fiduciary obligations and conflicts of interest.

Old Chancellor Day Hall, the Faculty of Law’s most iconic building, is closing at the end of June for 16 months as we undertake much-needed renovations to upgrade the building’s heating, electrical systems, plumbing, windows and more, while respecting its historical features.

Faculty and staff who were in OCDH have been relocated either to New Chancellor Day Hall and 3674-3690 Peel Street, or to rented office space near Ã山ǿ¼é’s Roddick Gates at 2001 Ã山ǿ¼é College Avenue, suite 750.
