The Cedars Cancer Institute of the MUHC takes on the dragon

Published: 30 September 2006

The Cedars Cancer Institute of the MUHC is holding its first annual Think Outside the Boat fundraising celebration. Cedars Cancer Institute, in association with Corporate Dragon, is changing the way cancer patients look at and deal with their illness. A determined group of 120 paddlers will be racing six dragon boats to symbolize the challenges faced by cancer patients and their families as they navigate through their treatment.

Dr. Sarkis Meterissian, Director of the Cedars Breast Clinic of the MUHC, says, "I am pleased that doctors, nurses and health care professionals can join with our patients, volunteers and donors in a day of fitness and in this dragon boat celebration to support a fully integrated centre providing comprehensive one-stop health care and hope to women in our community."

"The Cedars Dragon Boat Fundraiser will allow the young and old to raise awareness about the Cedars Breast Clinic and the good it does for women," explains Jeff Shamie, Executive Director, Cedars Cancer Institute. "It's great to see people of all fitness levels teaming up in a boat and paddling together to raise money for such a worthy cause."

Robin Hornstein, president of Corporate Dragon and organizer for the Cedars Dragon Boat Fundraiser, adds, "This event is about changing our perspective towards wellness and health. I don't know of anywhere else where I feel both anonymous and vital at the very same moment. The dragon is like that. It shares its secrets with me and expects my best in return. It's a trusting and symbiotic relationship and one that I treasure."

Admission is free and everyone is encouraged to come out and support this inspiring endeavour.
