Dr. Antoniou鈥檚 research focuses on the clinical and basic science investigation of aging and degeneration of the musculoskeletal system. His main interests include:
- Outcome of Total Hip & Knee Arthroplasty
- Biological Repair Strategies for Aging Discs Using Autologus Mesenchymal Stem Cells & Growth Factors
- Biological Repair Strategies for Osteoarthritic Cartilage Using Growth Factors
Hip & Knee Adult Reconstruction
- Tissue engineering of the intervertebral disc
- Quantitative magnetic resonance imaging as a diagnostic tool of intervertebral disc degeneration
- Periprosthetic osteolysis in total hip arthroplasty
Low back pain is a disorder afflicting the elderly population and in which, intervertebral disc degeneration plays a major role. Thus, my first research goal consists in engineering a replacement nucleus pulposus tissue using a hudrogel with differentiated adult mesenchymal stem cells. Furthermore, we believe that detecting and quantifying non-invasively the matrix and biomechanical changes in disc degeneration is key to treating this disease at its early stage. We believe that quantitative Magnetic Resonance Imaging is such a tool. Finally, my third main research interest is the study of periprosthetic osteolysis and wear debris in hip bearings. Joint replacement surgery is the most effective therapy to treat the pain and disability of patients with osteoarthritis. Metal-on-metal articulations are attractive but generate wear particles. We are thus analyzing the oxidative stress and metal ions in blood of patients with metal-on-metal hip bearings to better understand the clinical relevance of raised blood metal ions in patients with these bearings.

Dr. Antoniou specializes in adult joint reconstruction and alternative treatments for patients suffering from osteoarthritis. During his orthopaedic residency training, he pursued a PhD in Experimental Surgery with focus on the biochemistry and molecular biology of the musculoskeletal system. He completed the Canadian Royal College and US board certifications in orthopaedic surgery along with three fellowships in shoulder, hip and knee reconstruction. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada since 1997, a Fellow Member of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, a Fellow of International Orthopaedic Research, an active member of the International Hip Society and the Hip society (an honor bestowed on 80 of the world鈥檚 thought leaders in hip surgery).
Dr. Antoniou is the first orthopaedic surgeon to receive the 鈥淐hercheur National鈥 award of the Fonds de Recherche du Qu茅bec- Sant茅 (FRQS). He was invited to present his work in over 200 national and international conferences, workshops symposiums and courses in the United States, Japan, England, Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, Greece, Belgium and China and over 500 abstracts were presented at national and international meetings. He published and co-authored over 200 original articles in peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Antoniou has recently served as the president of the Canadian Orthopaedic Association, president of the Canadian Orthopaedic Research Society, he is chair of the Canadian Orthopaedic Association鈥檚 communications committee and chair of the Orthopaedic Research Society鈥檚 Collaborations Council. He is a scientific reviewer for journals, conferences, grant task forces and serves on several editorial boards. He has received numerous awards for his research, including the Royal College Gold Medal Award in Surgery, the Canadian Orthopaedic Research Society Founders鈥 Medal in 2011, Hansj枚rg Wyss Award 2011 and 2nd聽Berton Rahn Prize Award (Switzerland). He is the winner of the 2015 Amorchem knockout event and recently, he is the 2020 winner of adMare BioInnovations, First Quebec Start-Ups in Accelerate Program. His research and arthroplasty fellowship programs have attracted an increasing number of graduate students and fellows worldwide. In 2018 and 2019, Dr. Antoniou鈥檚 Adult Reconstruction Fellowship Program received the Omega Award for academic performance.
