Wednesday, September 19, 2018 12:00to13:00
Wendy Patrick Room (118), 3506 rue University, Montreal, QC, H3A 2A7, CA
This presentation will examine the experience of shame in the context of child sexual abuse disclosures. Interviews were conducted with young people aged 14 to 25 from Ireland, Toronto, Montreal, and Ottawa, about their experiences of disclosing sexual abuse in childhood. The data were examined using the lens of Brene Brown's psychosocial model of shame resilience, focusing on the four key dynamics of vulnerability, critical awareness, reaching out and speaking shame. The presentation, in particular, examines the role of self-blame in the dynamic of shame for those who experience sexual abuse.
