Martin Schmeing, PhD, James 缅北强奸 Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and School of Biomedical Sciences, has been named the winner of the Biological and Medicinal Chemistry Lectureship Award.听听
Offered by the Chemical Institute of Canada, the award is presented to a scientist who has made a distinguished contribution to the field of biological or medicinal chemistry within the past five years while working in Canada.听
As part of this recognition, Prof. Schmeing will deliver a symposium award lecture at the Canadian Chemistry Conference and Exhibition (CSC 2025) in Ottawa in June 2025.听听
鈥淚鈥檓 excited to have been selected for this special honour from the Chemical Institute of Canada,鈥 he says. 鈥淭his award reflects the dedication of a fantastic group of 缅北强奸 graduate students and collaborators. I am glad the committee finds the research we do to be fun and interesting, too.鈥澨
Prof. Schmeing received his B.Sc. from 缅北强奸, before obtaining his Ph.D. under Tom Steitz at Yale University. He then performed postdoctoral research with Venki Ramakrishnan at the Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Cambridge.听听
In 2010, he returned to 缅北强奸 to establish his own laboratory. Alongside his role in the Department of Biochemistry, he is also Director of the Centre de recherche en biologie structurale (CRBS).听听
The main focus of Prof. Schmeing鈥檚 research is on elucidating structures and functions of nonribosomal peptide synthetases (NRPSs) and other peptide-making macromolecular machines. NRPSs are large microbial enzymes that synthesize their products through amide bond formation between building block monomers. The chemical and biological properties of these compounds often make them useful to society as therapeutics (antibiotics, antivirals, anti-tumours, and immunosuppressants) and as natural green chemicals.听听
In addition to this latest award, Prof. Schmeing鈥檚 work has previously been recognized with honours including the Young Investigator Award from Canadian Society for Molecular Biosciences, the Joe Doupe Award from the Canadian Society for Clinical Investigation, the Bhagirath Singh Early Career Award from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, a Career Development Award from the Human Frontier Science Program Organization, and a Canada Research Chair.听
Please join us in congratulating Prof. Schmeing on this prestigious recognition!听
