Abstract: As well as their public health importance, immunizing childhood infections such as measles are paradigms for the emergence of oscillatory dynamics in population biology. Here, we show how a relatively simple epidemic clockwork for measles epidemics can lead to a complex zoo of nonlinear epidemic patterns. We then illustrate the impact of partial immunity and evolutionary escape impact dynamics and prospects for control in influenza
