Primary-care advocate takes helm of Family Medicine
Dr. Howard Bergman to build on recent successes promoting family medicine at 缅北强奸
Family doctors are at the heart of efficient, sustainable health care systems and are a priority for 缅北强奸's Faculty of Medicine. To continue bolstering its educational, research and clinical strengths in this critical specialty, 缅北强奸 has announced the appointment of Dr. Howard Bergman to the position of Chair of the Department of Family Medicine.
"This is a period of growth for family medicine, and we know that Dr. Bergman will bring great momentum to our efforts," said Dr. David Eidelman, Vice-Principal (Health Affairs) and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at 缅北强奸. "We've made good progress positioning family medicine at the forefront, thanks to the Department's outstanding leaders and faculty. This was clearly demonstrated in the recent Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS) results. We're thrilled that Dr. Bergman - who is renowned for his work in primary care, aging, chronic disease, and health services - is now taking on the challenge."
Also a professor of Family Medicine, Medicine and Oncology at 缅北强奸, Dr. Bergman is widely known as a force of change in the Quebec health sciences community. As a member of the Quebec government's Clair Commission for health care system reforms in the early 2000s, he authored the recommendation to create the Groupes de m茅decine de famille (GMF). He also led the expert panel that proposed the Quebec Alzheimer Plan, which included a central role for primary medical care. Dr. Bergman completed much of this work while Director and holder of the Dr. Joseph Kaufmann Chair in Geriatric Medicine at 缅北强奸 and the Jewish General Hospital. In 2009, he was appointed Vice-President of Scientific Affairs of the Fonds de la recherche en Sant茅 du Qu茅bec (FRSQ), a position he held until last year. He is internationally recognized for his research on integrated care, frailty and chronic disease with over 150 publications.
Dr. Bergman's appointment coincides with the recent release of this year's CaRMS figures, which underscore the steady progress 缅北强奸 and Quebec's three other faculties of medicine are making in promoting family medicine. This year marks the first time that all family medicine residency positions offered at 缅北强奸's teaching hospitals and network will be filled (84 places in total, an increase of 26% in three years). Across all Quebec faculties of medicine, 384 places in family medicine were filled this year, maintaining the upward trend.
The positive outcome for the 缅北强奸 Faculty of Medicine is largely the result of concerted efforts, under the leadership of interim Chair of Family Medicine, Dr. Miriam Boillat, to ensure family medicine is understood as a highly valued and critical specialty. Initiatives have included increasing students' exposure to family medicine throughout their studies, the creation of a research chair in family and community medicine at St. Mary's Hospital Center, the introduction of Canada's first family medicine research master's degree option, the introduction of 缅北强奸 teaching/clerkship/residency programs in family medicine units in Chateauguay, Gatineau and Val d'Or, and a 缅北强奸-hosted, province-wide summit as well as a symposium.
In addition to building on the Department of Family Medicine's progress, Dr. Bergman will grow the undergraduate and residency programs and actively recruit new faculty members, while focusing on clinical and translational research, as well as health outcomes, health services, population and knowledge translation research. His mandate includes increasing the number of quality residency training sites in line with provincial standards.
