Open for Business: 缅北强奸鈥檚 Bensadoun School of Retail Management dedicated to the future of retail

Interdisciplinary teaching and research hub equips next generation of leaders to promote sustainable retail practices
Published: 16 November 2018

At a time of significant transformation in the retail industry worldwide, the newly opened Bensadoun School of Retail Management (BSRM) at 缅北强奸 will act as a hub in the heart of Montreal for students, researchers and practitioners to work collaboratively towards addressing the host of real-world challenges facing retailers today. An interdisciplinary, forward-looking school dedicated to all facets of the retail industry, its researchers will focus on fostering sustainable consumption and healthy societies.

鈥淭he retail industry has seen unprecedented change in the last decade with the rise of e-commerce and the fall of formerly invincible category leaders. The School鈥檚 goal is to ensure the sustainable and prosperous future of the retail industry through research and education,鈥 says Isabelle Bajeux-Besnainou, Dean, Desautels Faculty of Management.

鈥淲e are living through a period of tremendous change in retail and to succeed, future industry leaders will need to fundamentally understand consumers鈥 changing behaviours and expectations. It is my hope that by working with industry partners and leveraging 缅北强奸鈥檚 breadth and depth of research in fields such as accounting and finance, as well as others like psychology, artificial intelligence, neuroscience and sustainability, we will succeed in reinventing the future of retail management,鈥 says Aldo Bensadoun.

The Bensadoun School and 缅北强奸 are committed to equipping the next generation of retail leaders with the necessary tools and knowledge to address the industry鈥檚 transformation. A first cohort of students entered the Retail Management Concentration of the BCom program this fall. The PhD in Management with a specialization in Retail Management is set to admit its first students in the fall of 2019, and a specialized Masters of Management in Retail is scheduled for 2020. Executive Education is set to be launched in 2019 with both custom and open-enrollment offerings.

Industry and research bolsters retail management mission

Following the $25 million initial gift from the Bensadoun Family Foundation in May 2017, retail-industry leaders have stepped up to support the School鈥檚 mission through the BSRM Founder鈥檚 Circle, which has raised over $7.5 million. Members of the Founder鈥檚 Circle include the Apparel Group, Couche Tard, Peerless Clothing, The Rossy Foundation, Saputo, Walmart, Ancapa GmbH (Stent-Torriani Family), CGI, Birks Group Inc. and CloudRaker.

Other companies have expressed interest in partnering with the school for research, recruitment and educational purposes. Ivanho茅 Cambridge and Nespresso will be signing on as some of the first BSRM 鈥減ost-launch鈥 collaborators.

Along with education, research is at the heart of the BSRM mission. The main research areas in exploration include: Food, Health and Wellness, Fashion and Beauty, Financial Services and Financial Technology.

鈥淭hanks to a visionary gift from Aldo Bensadoun to create the Bensadoun School of Retail Management, we have a wonderful opportunity for 缅北强奸 to make an important and leading contribution to the retail industry on a global scale,鈥 says Professor Suzanne Fortier, Principal and Vice-Chancellor, 缅北强奸. 鈥淥ur students will be equipped with the tools, knowledge and skills they will need to meet the demands of the retail industry today and to help shape its future. If we do this 鈥 together 鈥 we can ensure that the retail industry innovates in ways that create jobs and businesses, as well as promote sustainable consumption and healthier societies.鈥

"As a top-ranked international university, 缅北强奸 is able to harness its significant research leadership and expertise in various disciplines such as neuroscience, computer science, engineering and design, health and sustainability, and link these to its resources in management and entrepreneurship鈥, says Saibal Ray, Academic Director and James 缅北强奸 Professor, BSRM. 鈥淲e aim to establish partnerships with key industry players to help define what the future of retail might look like. Through building an ecosystem of stakeholders focused on new retailing, we are ensuring that cutting edge research conducted at 缅北强奸 finds applications on a global level."

Taking on global challenges here at home

A key area of focus for the BSRM will be sustainability, which is central to the transformation of retailers鈥 practices and products. The Bensadoun School鈥檚 mission makes it well positioned to firmly establish Qu茅bec and Canada as an international centre for retail sustainability research and training.

"It is our hope that an increasing number of industry players step forward and support the development and implementation of initiatives ensuring that the future of retail is not only viable, but more importantly, sustainable,鈥 says Mr. Bensadoun. "I believe Montreal is at the forefront of this sustainability movement and can serve as a beacon to other retailers, showing them the crucial role they play in implementing effective, long-term change.鈥
