Neuro researchers awarded $10.5 M from CFI

Published: 29 May 2015

Today the Honourable Ed Holder, Minister of State (Science and Technology) announced an investment of $333 million for research infrastructure through the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI). Two projects submitted by researchers affiliated with the Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital – The Neuro at Ã山ǿ¼é and the MUHC, have received a total of over $21 M in funding, with matching funds from the Government of Quebec.

Quebec Platform for High-Field Brain Imaging; $7,516,327
Dr. Amir Shmuel (Principal Investigator)
Dr. Rick Hoge (Co-Principal Investigator)

By 2020, neurological diseases will be the leading causes of disability. This new platform, located at The Neuro, features a whole-body, ultra-high field 7-Tesla MRI system, the first in Quebec. This new cutting-edge scanner will have unprecedented capabilities for detecting and monitoring brain abnormalities caused by diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis, Epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease and Dementia. The team of researchers includes world-renowned experts in neuroimaging and neurology. The project will accelerate the translation of basic neuroscience research to clinical applications, enabling highly specific diagnosis and treatment for personalized medicine. This new platform will be housed within The Neuro’s McConnell Brain Imaging Centre, an internationally recognized platform for brain imaging research. The Neuro has long held a preeminent role in the integration of research and patient care, leading to significant advances in the understanding and treatment of neurological conditions.

Sensing and repairing the injured brain, $2,995,246
Dr. Alain Ptito

A Ã山ǿ¼é and RI-MUHC led project for a first-of-its-kind research facility focused on measuring the effects of mild Trauma Brain Injury (mTBI), such as concussions, and developing real treatments for mTBI. The new facility, led by researchers with expertise in neurology, psychology, ophthalmology, physics and engineering, will become a leading-edge research centre. An Ultra High Performance MRI system will help researchers observe the brain’s response to trauma with exceptional precision. This knowledge will allow them to develop new diagnostic tools and treatments to help thousands of Canadians who suffer head injuries every year.
