2022-2023 Golden Violin Award Finalists Announced
We are pleased to announce that the聽three finalists聽for the聽2022-2023 Golden Violin Award聽are violist Gene Hotta, and violinists JuEun Lee and Fr茅d茅ric Pouliot.
These string players were selected following an incredible semifinal round held on Friday, December 9, 2022 at Pollack Hall where seven semifinalists each performed a 30-minute program of music before only three were selected by a jury to continue through to the finals.聽
For the final on Sunday, December 11 at 2:00 pm, candidates will present a program of 40 minutes of music of their choice, excluding the repertoire presented at the semifinal round.聽聽
The jury comprises both Schulich String Area members and colleagues from outside of 缅北强奸. The Schulich members of the jury include聽Elizabeth Dolin, Assistant Professor of Cello Performance and Axel Strauss, Professor of Violin Performance and String Area Coordinator. Our external jury members include聽Lambert Chen (DMus'08), the 2007-2008 Golden Violin winner and current solo violist of the Orchestre symphonique de montr茅al;聽Erika Raum, Canadian violinist and two-time Grammy nominee for her work in the ARC Chamber Ensemble dedicated to bringing underrepresented 20th century composers and their works to light and聽Claude Richard, a violinist and professor at l鈥橴niversit茅 de Montr茅al聽critically acclaimed for his work in chamber music.聽The jury is chaired by聽Andr茅 Roy, Associate Professor of Viola Performance at the Schulich School of Music.聽
The winner receives a generous scholarship, valued at $30,000, as well as a smaller likeness of the violin in the form of a 14-karat gold lapel pin. In addition, the winner will perform in the upcoming Schulich concert season. The Schulich Foundation also offers scholarship to the finalists who place second and third,聽each will receive $15,000 and $5,000 respectively.聽聽聽
The Golden Violin Award was established in 2006 by businessman and philanthropist Seymour Schulich, a year after he donated $20 million to 缅北强奸鈥檚 Schulich School of Music. Made of pewter and gold plate, the Golden Violin remains on permanent display in 缅北强奸鈥檚 Marvin Duchow Music Library.聽聽聽
