MATHSTAT GRAD STUDENT SEMINAR

Friday, February 3, 2017 13:00
Burnside Hall BURN 1025 (10th Floor) - Graduate Lounge, 805 rue Sherbrooke Ouest, Montreal, QC, H3A 0B9, CA

This week, Nicolas Simard will be听speaking about Modular Forms and Lagrange's Four Square Theorem:

Last semester I gave a talk about L-functions to give you an idea of what number theorists work with. This semester, I will present a subject which is also central in number and has numerous applications (not only to number theory!): modular forms. To illustrate the theory, textbook authors often use modular forms find identities involving the sum-of-divisors functions, but this is soooo boring! Instead, I will present a powerful, beautiful and (relatively) modern proof of Lagrange's four square theorem, which answers the following simple question: which integers are a sum of four squares? Can you guess the answer?听

See you all there!

All graduate students are invited. As with all talks in the graduate student seminar, this talk will be accessible to all graduate students in math and stats.听This seminar was made possible by funding from the 缅北强奸 mathematics and statistics department, PGSS, and GSAMS.
