Opening timelines extended

Published: 8 February 2023

Dear members of the Macdonald Campus community,

Testing is continuing at the Barton and Macdonald-Stewart buildings. The Emergency Operations Centre is extending testing to all rooms in the complex to ensure complete coverage.

This, unfortunately, will further extend timelines for the buildings to re-open. The earliest date on which testing will be completed is likely the end of next week.

We know that this news will be very frustrating for many people who need to access the building for classes, research and work. We are prioritizing safety and thoroughness, while working as quickly as we can.

The inherent uncertainty in a situation such as this can take a toll. Although this situation may be quite difficult for you, we ask that you please continue to respect the people working on site and not take out your frustration on them.

There is a waiting list for the fit testing of appropriate PPE that must be done to gain access to the complex and we are working on increasing capacity as quickly as we can.

As noted in previous messages:

  • Classes: Classes scheduled in these buildings during the closure period will be held online where feasible, or relocated if possible. Classes that can be neither held online nor relocated will unfortunately be cancelled.
  • Research activities: Only research personnel who must care for animals or maintain live cell cultures or plants may enter the buildings. Arrangements must first be made by emailing emergency.mgmt [at] mcgill.ca to obtain appropriate PPE.
  • Staff: Academic, administrative and support staff working in the Raymond, Barton or Macdonald-Stewart buildings must work from home for the duration of the closure, unless their supervisor requests their presence and can arrange an alternative in-person location. Staff who cannot perform their duties remotely will be paid for days they cannot work.
  • Macdonald Campus Library: Library e-resources are available 24/7, seven days a week. For general research assistance or Library-related questions, the Virtual Reference Service is available Monday through Friday from 10 am to 6 pm, and Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 5 pm. Liaison librarians are also available to assist with subject-specific research.

We are committed to communicating via email and the Macdonald Campus website as we have more information, including more precise timelines. Your patience and understanding are greatly appreciated.

Pierre Barbarie,
Senior Director, Campus Public Safety, on behalf of the Emergency Operations Centre
