PhD Oral Defense of Fran莽ois Gagn茅-Bourque, Plant Science.

Most healthy naturally propagated plants grown in field or potting soils are colonized by different taxonomic groups of endophytic bacteria. These bacteria form non-pathogenic relationships with their hosts. Such associations can increase plant growth and hasten development or improve resistance to environmental stress. In this study, several bacterial endophytes, isolated from cultivars of switchgrass (Panicum virgatum), were studied for their antimicrobial properties, growth promoting potential, re- colonization and vertical transmission via seeds. Bacillus subtilis strain 26 was further evaluated as plant growth promoting bacteria (PGPB) on the full life cycle of Brachypodium distachyon Bd21, an established model species in cereal crops and temperate grasses.
