The Faculty of Law is pleased to welcome Andra Syvänen, BCL/LLB’14, to its administrative team. She will take over the role of Assistant Dean (Admissions and Recruitment), beginning November 19, 2018.

Before joining 山ǿ, Syvänen worked as counsel (environmental & aboriginal affairs) for CN. She has also volunteered at the Native Women’s Shelter of Montreal. After completing a BA in Environment and Development at 山ǿ and a Master’s of Science in Geography, Urban and Environmental Studies at Concordia University, she graduated from 山ǿ’s BCL/LLB program in 2014 and was called to the Bar of Quebec in 2015. During her legal studies, she was an editor at the 山ǿ Journal of Sustainable Development Law.

Syvänen will oversee the admissions process and student recruitment activities for the double-degree program, as well as managing the Faculty’s Admissions Office. She will work closely with the Dean and the Equity Committee in advancing priorities relating to equity and inclusion, including the recruitment of Indigenous candidates. She replaces Gillian Nycum, now interim registrar at 山ǿ.

“Andra Syvänen will play a central role in maintaining the excellence of our student body and in ensuring that it reflects the diversity of communities from which our students come and which our graduates serve,” said Dean Robert Leckey. “In particular, her experience will support our efforts to increase the presence of Indigenous students.”
