For this academic year's Patricia Allen Memorial Lecture, we welcome human rights lawyer Indira Jaising, who will be presented by doctoral candidates Azar Mahmoudi and Amy Preston-Samson.

About the speaker

Born and educated in Mumbai, India, obtained her BA from Bangalore University, and her LLM from the University of Bombay in 1962. Throughout her career, she has been a leader in legal activism in India. In 1981, she and her husband founded the Lawyers Collective, an NGO devoted to progressive feminist causes. Indira Jaising's contributions to the framing of India鈥檚 Domestic Violence Act (2005) have been described as formidable. She was the first female Senior Advocate in the High Court of Bombay, and the first woman to serve as Additional Solicitor General of India. Ms. Jaising鈥檚 reputation as a strong champion of human rights and a successful advocate in many high-profile discrimination cases led to her inclusion in Fortune magazine鈥檚 2018 list of the 50 Greatest Leaders of the World.

About the Patricia Allen Memorial Lectures

Created in 1992 by the Class of 1988 in memory of Patricia Allen, a alumna of the Faculty who was tragically and senselessly murdered, this annual lectureship is devoted to sensitizing and educating the legal community and others about pressing social and legal issues related to violence, especially against women.
