Professor and Departmental Chair Jason M. Opal and his father, Prof. Steven M. Opal (Alpert Medical School at Brown) have co-written an op-ed for the on how health systems across the globe need funding and higher levels of preparation to deal with future pandemics. While humanity has been overrun by five different virus-brine pathogens in the last five decades, governments have slashed health care funding in the last decades. As a result, national health care systems are competing with each other for scarce resources during the current pandemic. Greater national efforts in preparing for a future pandemic and increased international efforts need to go hand in hand to be ready once the next pandemic arises.
