Fellow Feature: Sneha Senthil

Sneha Senthil (she/her) is a Master’s student in Dr. James Near's lab. 

What is your previous degree in? Where did you earn it from?

I obtained my Bachelor's in Physics (Honours) from St. Stephen's College at the University of Delhi.

What is your area of research and what are the implications of your project?

The objective of my MSc research project is to develop rapid, high-resolution magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging for mapping metabolite concentrations in the human brain. My initial focus has been on developing a rapid MRSI pulse sequence using a ‘rosette’ k-space trajectory design, which would eventually be followed by implementation, testing and validation.

What inspired you to pursue your current degree?

I've long been fascinated by how the brain, a formidably complex machine composed of about one hundred billion neurons and trillions of connections, works. Out of this system, as if by magic, perception, behaviour and thought arise.

After attending a number of seminars, webinars and conferences linked to medical physics and neuroscience during my undergraduate years, my ultimate goal started taking shape.

I want to understand and therapeutically address the physiological mechanisms underlying human diseases using a multidisciplinary approach that could eventually change terminal or life-long illnesses into treatable, or even curable, conditions. My undergraduate research enabled me to find my passion in neuroscience and my master's project in Dr. Jamie Near’s lab has helped me find what fulfills me.

What do you think are the biggest challenges in your field? How have you tried to overcome them?

As a woman of colour coming from a developing country, I have struggled with impostor syndrome.  I was told during my undergraduate years that I wasn't good enough to be in science. I couldn't have made it here without my support system— my family, my supervisor and my colleagues and friends— who made me believe I am here for a reason.

To anyone who feels the same way about themselves, just remember that you are worthy. Add your own touch of sparkle wherever you go— you got this!

What are your three favourite activities outside the lab?

Aside from spending time with friends and family, I like to try out new recipes and travel to different parts of the world.

What accomplishment are you most proud of this year?

One of my greatest achievements this year was successfully making my way to Canada from India and overcoming the various challenges the move posed while still continuing my program. Moving to the other side of the world is daunting enough as it is, but doing so during a global pandemic with flights being cancelled on a regular basis is a whole other story! Luckily, I was able to make it here safely and continue my work in person at the Near lab.
