Plant Science (M.Sc.)

Program Description

The Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Plant Science (Thesis) offered by the Department of Plant Science in the Faculty of Agricultural & Environmental Sciences is a research-intensive program that emphasizes rigorous and advanced learning opportunities. The program's objective is to equip students with skills in academic writing, data collection, and research dissemination to either continue their studies or pursue professional opportunities.

There are several options available in addition to the standard program:

Bioinformatics option: focuses on the interdisciplinary field of bioinformatics, which lies at the intersection of biological/medical sciences and mathematics/computer science/engineering.

Neotropical Environment option: gives students the opportunity to focus their graduate research on environmental issues relevant to the Neotropics and Latin American countries.

Keywords: Crop and vegetable production, crop physiology, environmetrics, genomics, horticulture, plant pathology, plant breeding, plant-insect/pathogen interactions, weed biology and control; genomics, proteomics, structural bioinformatics, systems biology; sustainability, environmental issues, environmental policy, plant systematics; tropical biology, neotropics, Latin America, interdisciplinary research, Panama.

Unique Program Features

  • Students have benefit from research facilities - both field and laboratory - to conduct investigations in plant breeding, crop physiology, crop management, crop quality, plant ecology, the epidemiology and biology of plant diseases, epigenetics, biosystematics, recombinant DNA technology, mycology, weed biology, tissue culture, plant biochemistry, and bioinformatics;
  • Additional facilities include: the Horticultural Research Centre, the Emile A. Lods Agronomy Research Centre, a variety of greenhouses and growth cabinets, the 缅北强奸 Herbarium, a multi-scale imaging facility, a genome editing laboratory, a plant-pest containment laboratory, and field phenomics platform;
  • Students in the Neotropical Environment option complete their core and complementary courses in Panama and their research in Latin America.
