History (M.A.)

Program Description

The Master of Arts (M.A.) in History (Thesis) offered by the Department of History and Classical Studies in the Faculty of Arts is a research-intensive program that emphasizes challenging and innovative learning opportunities. The program's objective is to equip students with skills in critical reading, original thinking, and academic writing to either continue their studies or pursue professional opportunities.

The program may also be taken as one of the following options:

Development Studies option: offers advanced thematic and methodological training in using the discipline of history to study international development. The thesis must relate to an historical topic related to a theme in international development.

Gender and Women's Studies option: offers specialized courses in Gender & Women鈥檚 Studies and student's complete their thesis with an emphasis on feminist, women鈥檚, and gender studies.

Keywords: Canadian, British, European, and East Asian history, history of medicine, science, gender and sexuality, history of the Atlantic and Indian Ocean worlds, global history.

Unique Program Features

  • The program provides a strong grounding either for further advanced studies in History (Ph.D.) or as a gateway to a variety of professions;
  • The Department of History is one of the largest in Canada;
  • Students benefit from the possibility (with the approval of the Department) to take up to 6 credits outside of the department/university (e.g., History departments at Concordia, Universit茅 de Montr茅al, Universit茅 du Qu茅bec 脿 Montr茅al);
  • Faculty members expertise focuses on Canadian/British and European/East Asian history, the history of science and newer fields such as the history of gender and sexuality, the history of the Atlantic and Indian Ocean worlds, and global history.

University-Levels Admission Requirements

  • An eligible Bachelor's degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA out of a possible 4.0 GPA
  • English-language proficiency
