EMERGENCY ROOMS: CHAOTIC or HEROIC?

In this lecture, Dr. Peter Nugus will explore the inner workings of emergency rooms (ERs) from a unique perspective. His insights are drawn from thousands of hours of observations as an ethnographer in ERs in five different countries. The ER is a snapshot of the 鈥渨icked problems and tragic choices鈥 of contemporary health care. The presentation exemplifies the competing priorities, tensions and politics that embroil ER health professionals. The ethical dilemmas and trade-offs we witness belong not only to the ER but reflect choices that emergency care poses for wider society. For anyone interested in our current health care system, particularly its future, this lecture on an insider鈥檚 perspective of the workings of the critical emergency services will be thought provoking and illuminating.聽

The emergency room has long suffered the sharp end of fragmented care in the broader health care system. An unintended consequence of COVID-19 has been to show how the flexibility of health care professionals and trainees, who have shifted or adapted to collaborative work on the frontlines, can stitch together coordinative mechanisms that are challenged by super-specialized medicine. Health care organizational and educational systems need to foster such creativity, flexibility, innovation, critical thinking and inter-professional collaboration, not only during pandemics but also for future routine care.
