Construction Start: Replacement of steam and condensate pipes between Raymond and CINE, Macdonald Campus

Replacement of steam and condensate pipes between Raymond and CINE

Construction start date: June 12th, 2024

Planned construction end date: August 2024

Work schedule: Monday to Friday 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. Any additional hours will be coordinated.

Scope of work:

The project involves replacing an old steam and condensate piping system between the Raymond and CINE buildings due to a severe leak that is difficult to locate and fix. Considering the pipes are at the end of their lifespan, the plan is to install a new system that will efficiently serve the CINE building and the Plant Research Facility.

Impact & mitigation:

The construction site will be divided into two zones:

  • Interior zone, located within CINE’s mechanical room (see figures A and B below).
  • Exterior zone, which will be closed off by construction fencing (see figure C below).

Access:

  • Road closure: East Cottages Road will need to be completely closed from July 2nd, 2024, to August 19, 2024. All traffic will be rerouted around the campus (see figure D below).
  • Any access to spaces outside the construction zone will be coordinated in advance with the building director and the building occupants.

Service shutdowns:

  • A steam service shutdown will be required. Occupants of affected buildings will be informed in advance.

Safety considerations

Demolition work involving asbestos-containing materials is planned from the 17th of June until mid-July 2024

  • The project involves removing insulation containing asbestos from key pipes that will disrupt materials containing asbestos. All applicable safety protocols will be put in place. The safety protocols include dust-containment methods such as setting up enclosures to isolate the work area and putting it under negative pressure, as well as using specialized vacuuming equipment. It will also include cleaning and regular inspections.
