Advanced life deferred annuities can give retirees peace of mind
For people with defined contribution pension plans, longevity risk is a significant concern. You don鈥檛 want to outlive your money. The issue is compounded because today鈥檚 retirees have longer life expectancies than ever before, writes Sebastien Betermier in Benefits Canada. Most retirees decumulate their capital on their own, but because they鈥檙e afraid to outlast their savings, this leads to a pattern of living poor and dying rich. An advanced life deferred annuity (ALDA) can help address this problem. These financial products only recently became available in Canada, and present a cost-effective way to access steady income later in life. Payments don鈥檛 start until the age of 85, which means an ALDA is considerably cheaper than a traditional life annuity. A retiree can purchase an ALDA and continue to invest their money, giving them the opportunity for investment growth and flexibility in spending during their earlier phases of retirement.
