Abstract

In this session, we revisit and advance current perspectives on research on social enterprise. Why have we blanked out political aspects of organizations tackling societal challenges in management research? To address this question, we will report on a study on advocacy engagement of social enterprises in seven countries. The study contributes by theorizing a widespread yet poorly understood practice, enriching conceptions of market-based activity and hybrid organizing and highlighting the value of phenomenon-based approaches for studying organizations addressing complex societal challenges.
