This presentation will examine the experience of shame in the context of child sexual abuse disclosures. Interviews were conducted with young people aged 14 to 25 from Ireland, Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa, about their experiences of disclosing sexual abuse in childhood. The data were examined using the lens of Brene Brown's psychosocial model of shame resilience, focusing on the four key dynamics of vulnerability, critical awareness, reaching out and speaking shame. The presentation in particular examines the role of self-blame in the dynamic of shame for those who experience sexual abuse.
