Ã山ǿ¼é researchers identify proteins that drive cancer stem cells. Targeting and supressing a particular protein called galectin1 could provide a more effective treatment for glioblastoma, in combination with radiation therapy.

Due to its resistance to therapy, glioblastoma is the most common and aggressive cancerous brain tumour in adults. It grows fast and spreads quickly. While treatments such as surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy can help ease symptoms for a few months, in most cases tumour cells regrow after treatment and the cancer recurs.

Canadians spend big money dealing with the consequences of homelessness, but the money spent could be far more effective. According to a new Ã山ǿ¼é-led analysis, housing homeless people with severe mental illness is even more cost-effective than housing homeless people with moderate needs. A Housing-First strategy aimed at helping these individuals regain and keep permanent housing generates savings equal to about two-thirds of its cost.

New findings out of Ã山ǿ¼é in Montreal have revealed a potential way to overcome aggressive brain tumours' resistance to therapy: by deleting a specific gene. Researchers have long been searching for ways to treat Glioblastomas – the most stubborn type of brain tumour – as they’re well known for their resistance to treatment. A few years back, they were able to confirm the key role a gene called the OSMR gene plays in the process of brain cancer growth.

Pioneering research at Ã山ǿ¼é’s Goodman Cancer Research Centre gets boost

The 4th Goodman Cancer Research Gala has raised more than $2.1 million to fund foundational research, more effective diagnostic tools and the development of new treatments and therapies for cancer patients.  The Gala was held on Sunday, June 5 in Montreal, bringing together more than 800 guests in support of Ã山ǿ¼é’s Rosalind and Morris Goodman Cancer Research Centre.
