Last week, a Globe article outlined the challenges that Canada faces in establishing itself as a trading power in the Asian region.

As I read along, I suddenly thought of a scene from the movie Shrek, where the donkey character jumps in and out of view, shouting: 鈥淥h, oh, pick me . . . oh, pick me . . . oh me . . . me, me, meeeee (donkey falls out of view)鈥.

Last week (Sept. 16), Mexico celebrated its 202nd anniversary of independence. In the scheme of anniversaries, this year was not of particular importance. As it pertains to Mexico鈥檚 budding democracy, though, this year鈥檚 celebrations provided Mexicans, from Tijuana to Mexicali, with the opportunity to reflect on looming changes to Mexico鈥檚 political landscape.
