Multi-million dollar project to assess environmental risks of toxic chemicals

Assessing the risks that toxic chemicals pose to natural ecosystems is a major challenge, but the task is expected to become less daunting thanks to a new tool, referred to as EcoToxChip, which is being developed by �山ǿ�� researchers, including Desautels Professor Steve Maguire.

The $9.6 million initiative is one of 13 applied research projects selected to receive funding from Genome Canada.

Abstract:

At the intersection of Strategy Process (SP) and Strategy-as-Practice (SAP) research lies the focal phenomenon they share – strategy, which manifests itself in a variety of ways: intended, realized, deliberate, emergent, unrealized, and ephemeral strategy.

We present a methodology comprised of three stages that, when integrated in the manner we suggest, permit a rich operationalization and tracking of strategy content for all manifestations. We illustrate the utility of our methodology for bridging SP and SAP research by theorizing practices that are more likely to give rise to unrealized and ephemeral strategy, identifying their likely consequences, and presenting a research agenda for studying these transient manifestations.

Professor Steve Maguire’s paper published in the Academy of Management Review, 41(1): 80 – 108 with co-author Cynthia Hardy was selected by the Best Paper Awards Committee for the prestigious distinction as one of the top three finalists for best papers published in AMR in 2016.

Genome Canada and its partners have awarded $9.6 million towards the assessment of the risks that toxic chemicals pose to the environment. The funding will support an interdisciplinary team of �山ǿ�� researchers, including Professor Steve Maguire of the Desautels Faculty of Management, along with partners in industry, Environment and Climate Change Canada, and at the University of Saskatchewan.

Two �山ǿ�� Professors Participate in Prestigious Workshop on Green Chemistry

On May 24-25, 2016, experts from the field of green (sustainable) chemistry gathered in Washington, DC, for a workshop on Sustainable Chemistry Technologies. The event was organized by the National Academy of Science’s Board on Chemical Sciences and Technology at the request of the United States General Accountability Office.

Sustainability Innovations in Business Programs

Launched in fall of 2014, Desautels’ new programming in Managing for Sustainability was designed for students who wish to combine managerial and business knowledge with a solid understanding of the interlinked economic, social, and ecological challenges of achieving sustainability. It integrates management studies with fundamentals of environmental science and sustainability and is offered in collaboration with its co-designers, the �山ǿ�� School of Environment and the Department of Geography.

The environmentalists and green groups at the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference, which starts today in Paris, will inevitably call for better leadership on sustainability issues. They will not have to travel far to find those willing to teach them.

Green topics become the norm

The Desautels Faculty of Management at �山ǿ��, Montreal, “normalised” the climate-change issue as a core topic a long time ago, says Steve Maguire, director of the school’s institute for integrated management.
