MONTREAL – Senior Nathifa Weekes, a 5-foot-7 guard from Brossard, Que., scored a game-high 21 points as Ã山ǿ¼é rallied from a six-point, third-quarter deficit to upend visiting Concordia 72-65 in women’s university basketball before a crowd of 324 at Love Competition Hall, Saturday.

It avenged Friday’s loss at Concordia, snapped a nine-game losing streak for the Martlets and was their first win since defeating Bishop’s in the season opener on Nov. 14. It also marked the team’s first win in five tries over Concordia, since a 64-52 decision on Nov. 22, 2007.

Weekes, who shot 5-for-13 from the floor and made 11 of 13 attempts from the foul-line, was also credited with seven rebounds, five assists, four steals and one blocked shot in 34 minutes of court time.

Ã山ǿ¼é led 12-9 after the opening quarter, 34-28 at the half but trailed 51-47 after three stanzas.

Freshman forward Anneth Him-Lazarenko of St. Dorothée, Que., and guard Stephanie Bergeron of Montreal, added 18 and 16 points to the victory, respectively.

Him-Lazarenko, who stands 5-foot-10 and pulled down 11 rebounds, was 8-for-14 from the floor and 1-for-2 from the line.

Teammate Elisa Lépine, a 5-foot-11 freshman from Mission, B.C., contributed nine points and grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds, including a dozen in the defensive zone.

Krystie Douglas, a junior from Chateauguay, Que., led Concordia with 14 points.

Ã山ǿ¼é, which had a 42-36 edge in rebounds, a 13-8 margin in steals, shot 39.3 per cent from the field (24/61), 41.2 from the three-point arc (7/17) and 73.9 from the line (17/23), compared to Concordia, who shot 37.5, 26.1 and 57.9, respectively.

The win moved Ã山ǿ¼é into a tie for third place with the Stingers as both teams have identical 2-6 records.

The Martlets will play a home-and-home series against Bishop’s next weekend, beginning on Jan. 23 at Lennoxville. The Stingers will play UQAM on the same dates.
