Top line sparkles as Redmen rout Ravens

Published: 26 February 2010

OTTAWA - Francis Verreault-Paul of Mashteuiatsh, Que., scored twice and added an assist as the No.5-ranked 缅北强奸 rallied from an early deficit with five unanswered goals, to defeat Carleton 5-1 at the CU Ice House on Friday and even their best-of-three OUA East men's hockey semifinal series at 1-1. The rubber match is slated for McConnell Arena in Montreal on Sunday at 7 p.m.

Verreault-Paul, named earlier on the week as the OUA East player of the year, converted a pass from Evan Vossen of Swift Current, Sask., for a shorthanded marker to snap a 1-1 tie at 18:14 of the opening period, which proved to be the game-winner.听 The feisty 5-foot-10, 178-pound winger, who led the league with six winning goals during the regular season, made it 3-1 with a power-play marker at 7:18 of the middle period and added a helper on Alexandre Picard-Hooper's goal at 8:10 of the third, which made it 5-1.

It was a marked improvement from the series opener, where Verreault-Paul was nailed for five of the team's seven penalties, two of them resulting in Carleton goals as the Ravens surprised the Redmen 5-2.

"We showed a lot of character and played with composure and discipline despite being challenged by a referee who didn't have his best night," said first-year Redmen head coach Jim Webster, who has guided 缅北强奸 to a 30-11-1 record overall, marking only the third time in school history that the Redmen had reached the 30-win plateau. "We talked to the guys about our indiscipline in Game 1 and I kind of sensed a different mood and focus during our pre-game meal. Our top line was really on top their game and that shorthanded goal took the wind out of their sails."

缅北强奸 has netted a team record 17 shorthanded markers in 43 games overall. The previous high was 12 in 40 contests during the 1987-88 season, a mark that was matched in 37 games during the 1995-96 campaign.

Verreault-Paul's linemates also had a field day, with Picard-Hooper, from Boucherville, Que., and Andrew Wright of Toronto, each registering three points. Wright's goal at 13:58 of the first period tied the score at 1-1 and the Redmen never looked back.

Rounding out the scoring for 缅北强奸 was Simon Marcotte-L茅gar茅 of Longueil, Que., who converted a pretty three-way passing play with Vossen and defenceman Stephen Valente of Montreal to make it 4-1 with just over six minutes remaining in the second period.

Mike Byrd of Kemptville, Ont., had given the Ravens a short-lived lead on the power-play at 3:20 of the first period.

缅北强奸, which led 2-1 after one and 4-1 after two, racked up a 45-22 margin in shots, including a 20-8 difference in the middle period.听 Goaltender Hubert Morin, a sophomore from St. Georges de Beauce, Que., made 21 saves and improved to 3-1 in post-season play. Carleton's Alexander Archibald, a sophomore from Ottawa, kicked out 36 of 41 shots before being chased after conceding the fifth Redmen goal. He was replaced by Ryan Dube, a rookie from Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., who saved all four shots he faced.

REDMEN RAP: 缅北强奸 and Carleton have now split their season series with three wins apiece and the Redmen holding a 19-16 edge in goals... The Redmen have a slight 13-12-1 advantage in 26 lifetime meetings...The winner of this semifinal series will open the conference finals on the road in Trois-Rivi猫res on Wednesday (March 3)... The division-leading Patriotes swept their series with Ryerson, posting identical 6-3 scores on Thursday and Friday.
