Ting rings up win as lacrosse lads smack Stingers

Published: 18 September 2011

MONTREAL -- Mike Ting of Boston, Mass., scored four goals and added an assist as the 缅北强奸 Redmen varsity lacrosse team pounded the Concordia Stingers 17-4 at the Westmount borough, Sunday.

This game marked the return of lacrosse -- after a century's absence -- to the original fields of the Westmount Athletic Grounds used by the Montreal Amateur Athletic Lacrosse Club in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Concordia, an independant club in its second year of existence, jumped out to a surprising 1-0 lead and managed to keep the game close at 1-1 after one quarter. But 缅北强奸 scored six unanswered goals in the second stanza to secure a 7-1 halftime lead. 缅北强奸 added another half-dozen markers in the third, while the Stingers replied with a pair to make the score 13-3 after three quarters.

"We had a shaky start against a motivated and athletic Concordia team, but settled down and took control in the second quarter," said head coach Tim Murdoch. "We rested 11 players, including eight starters, to provide an opportunity for many hard-working players at the back end of our roster to gain invaluable game experience," added Murdoch, who indicated that he looks forward to a CUFLA-sanctioned rivalry with the Stingers when they join the league next year.

Freshman midfielder Connor Goodwin of New Westminster, B.C., and junior attackman Ben Uveges of Phelps, N.Y., each scored twice and added three assists.听 Ryan Besse of Aurora, Ont., registered a hat-trick to go along with an an assist, while law student Antoine Champagne of Montreal, scored twice and added two helpers.

Other 缅北强奸 marksmen included Jordan Sanford of Biddeford, Maine, and Leland de Langley of Orangeville, Ont., who scored two goals apiece. Sanford's goal was set by by his cousin, freshman Jack Stewart of South Salem, N.Y.

Veteran goalie Simon Hudson of Seattle, Wash., earned the win and allowed just one goal in two quarters of play. Backup Jamie Spagnuolo, a freshman from Burnaby, B.C., allowed three goals but made several spectacular saves to preserve the win.

Joe Frank scored a pair for Concordia, which also had singles from Mark Kirbie, Lincoln Ford and Mike Knight.

The Redmen improved to 5-0 overall, including a 3-0 record in league play. They will face-off against Bishop's (2-0) in Lennoxville, Que., on Sept. 22, followed by a home game against Carleton (1-1) on Sept. 24 at Molson Stadium.
